Antique Art

  • My Antique print...."The Whistling Boy" is confusing because it has a gold wood frame that has a metal plate attached to the bottom front that says "The Whistling boy" (I ERRORED IN MY LAST QUESTION AND THIS IS A CORRECTION)Although this boy is whistling it is not the famous Duveneck painting. This one has the boy walking down a path wearing overalls and shirt a straw hat and a handmade fishing pole over one shoulder and carrying a straw basket in the other hand. He has bare feet. The picture is mostly dark colors with the boy very clear and the background sort of faded out. It is 16 1/2 x 12 1/2. The back of the frame is intirely covered by yellowed paper. (can't get it off to look for signature. This is the only way you would know the print belonged to the frame. Also written on the top of the back are the Beautiful handwritten words: "To Edwin (or Edevin) E. Blackburn 3rd from Grandma Blackburn Christmas 1938" If anyone has any information about this print It would be greatly apprieciated.

  • I have this print--I bought it about 35 years ago at a thrift shop.Mine is a smaller version, and is labeled The Whistling Boy on the back in a paper label. On mine, if you take a magnifying glass and look closely at the lower left corner there are 2 notes--one for 1881 and one for 1901.Also, this print was seen briefly in the PBS Ken Burns documentary Mark Twain, although with no attribution. That is all I know about it--I was searching on Google for more info when I saw your question.
